Rotterdam draws people who work in the port, study at its international university, or simply want more room than Amsterdam gives for the same budget. The city was rebuilt after 1940, so its housing stock is younger and its flats are often larger than the canal houses further north. Rotterdam is half an hour from The Hague by train, which makes it a realistic base even when the job is somewhere else.
